The beginning of the beginning of love was done

مشہور تھا بہت جبھی گمنام ہو گیا
آغازِ عشق کا عجب انجام ہو گیا
گوشہ نشینی کیوں اسے محبوب گئ
کیا مصحفِ جنون کا الہام ہو گیا
ہر باب ہر ورق پہ ہے تحریر بس توہی
یوں قصہء حیات کا اتمام ہوگیا
مہ وش نقاب میں ہے مگر یہ مذاق دیکھ
اس پر فریفتہ کوئ گلفام ہو گیا
ذکرِ وفا جو چھیڑا کسی نے بھی بھول کے
تو دل جلوں کی بزم میں کہرام ہو گیا
بے قابو تھا بہت کبھی ہاتھ آیا ہی نہ تھا
یہ دل تیری نگاہوں سے کیوں رام ہو گیا
اک نشترِ نگاہ سے دل کو لہو کیا
کیا زخم دے کے کچھ تجھے آرام ہو گیا؟
پہلے تو درسگاه تھا الفت کا یہ شہر
انسانیت کا خون یہاں عام ہو گیا
کیوں اۓحفیظؔ تم کو نظر آیا وہ نہیں
جو سنگسار آج سرِ عام ہو گیا

He was once renowned but became obscure,
The strange end of a love story occurred.
Why did he become a recluse, my beloved?
Did inspiration from the Quran of madness arrive?
On every page and every door, the writing is the same,
Thus the tale of life came to an end.
Although in the veil of wine, he remains hidden,
Upon the bewildered, someone’s gaze has descended.
Whoever dared to mention the memory of loyalty,
In the assembly of hearts, turmoil ensued.
Once unrestrained, he had no control,
Why did this heart become captivated by your eyes?
With a single arrow-like glance, what did you do to the heart?
Did you inflict wounds, bringing no peace?
Once, this city was the school of love,
Humanity’s blood has now become commonplace.
Why, Hafeez, didn’t you recognize it?
What used to be hidden is now public torment.”
